Camu camu (
Myrciaria dubia) is a low-growing shrub found throughout the Amazon rainforest. It is best known for its fruit, which has the highest recorded concentration of vitamin C of any plant in the world. It also contains rutin, bioflavonoids, beta-carotene, B vitamins, iron, calcium, potassium and a comprehensive complex of minerals and amino acids needed for full absorption of vitamin C. Camu camu is an antioxidant and is currently being studied for its use as an anti-herpetic and in the holistic treatment of depression. This wild jungle berry is sustainably harvested by indigenous natives of the Amazon region of Peru. It grows abundantly in the wilderness swamps along rivers and lakes, and is gathered directly into dug-out canoes. It is traded according to the highest fair trade standards.
